Surrounded by mountains that are still in their pristine and natural state, the town of Tambor is situated on the Western shore of Bahia Ballena which is an 8 mile horseshoe shaped Bay that opens to the Gulf of Nicoya and Pacific Ocean.
Tambor is known for its quiet and peaceful atmosphere and this little town is not for everyone as it is easy to get bored here, but everyone agrees it is a great place to find your self again. Nature abounds and along with hiking and horseback riding in the surrounding mountains, the main theme here is waters ports as there are miles of uninhabited sand beaches and coves to explore with calm waters that have no current for beginners and children alike to safely snorkel and swim.
El Muelle Tambor, a small fishing village which is an offshoot from the main town has one of the few Municipal Piers that you can find throughout the country where International Sailboats come and go throughout the year and commercial fishing Pangas work daily bringing in their catch, so eating fresh fish here is a given. If you want a really fresh caught fish dinner, Tambor is the place! Hosting a series of Sport Fishing boats that provide half and full day fishing charters, there are Sailfish and Whales in the mouth of the Bay starting in December. The fishing is done in close so there is no need to loose sight of land and deep sea fishing here takes on another form as this also becomes great family fun which is not only reserved for the hard core fisherman. Year round species include Sailfish, Marlin, Yellow fin Tuna, Dorado, Spanish mackerel, Red Snapper, Grouper, Barracuda and large Roosterfish, with the occasional Snook and Sea Bass thrown in. So if you've ever wanted to go Sport Fishing, but were afraid of the word Deep Sea, Tambor is the place to consider, renting a boat.
The main fishing is generally done a short ride along the coast out by the Cabo Blanco Marine Reserve where you will see an abundance of birds and aquatic life to include schools of resident Dolphins, Hugh Manta Rays along with various other migrating species including Humpack Whales. Tortuga Island is just around the Northern corner of the Bay and there is also a fleet of small Pangas available that will be happy to take you snorkeling there. Guided horseback tours with rides along the Panica river to the magnificent Panica Waterfall and along the beach to Punta Amarilla which is a Point on the Southern corner of Bahia Ballena that has white and pink coral sand which is made up from all of the Conk shells that are ground up and deposited there, along with ATV tours and Jet Ski rentals are also some of the popular tourist activities. For tour information along with reservations, give a call to American with a Car at 2683-1050 or visit their office in El Muelle.
Tambor also has the only Air Strip on the Southern Nicoya Peninsula with daily scheduled 20 minute flights to the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose. The flight across the Gulf of Nicoya and over the mountains to our Capital is picturesque and the flights are not very expensive so this would be an excellent option for your return to the Capital.
